Uptime essentially reference to the time during which the machine has been active and the time since the last downtime. It is usually used as a measure of the stability or reliability of an operating system or in this case of that of a website. In the odd case wherein the cheap web host computer or the server computer does manage to crash or if there is a power outage in the region of the server, the website which is running would shut down and ultimately be inaccessible to anyone who is using the internet. This would result in downtime for the website and hence this time needs to be minimized and uptime needs to be maximized.
With the increase in the downtime of the website, the reputation and also reliability tend to slide down and hence it is imperative that the uptime be maximized. At an extra cost, web hosting services usually offer special back up plans where they back up both the data on the server related to the website and also the server itself in the case of a blackout or a power failure. The backup would kick in once the actual server fails.
